How Delhi Electricity Bills Are Calculated (BSES & TPDDL)

Electricity distribution in the National Capital Territory of Delhi is regulated by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). Delhi features India's most progressive hybrid subsidy scheme: 100% Free Power (Zero Bill) for consumption up to 200 units/month, and a 50% Energy Subsidy (up to ₹800/month) for consumption between 201 and 400 units/month. Consuming more than 400 units results in the total forfeiture of all subsidies.

Tier 1: 0–200 Units 100% Free

Households consuming up to 200 units in a month receive 100% complete waiver on energy charges, fixed charges, Pension surcharge, PPAC, and electricity duty.

Net Payable Bill: ₹0.00 (Zero Bill)
Tier 2: 201–400 Units 50% Energy Off

Consumers receive a 50% state subsidy on energy charges (capped at maximum ₹800.00/month). Fixed charges, Pension surcharge, PPAC, and 5% Duty are payable.

Max Subsidy: ₹800.00 / month
Tier 3: 401+ Units Subsidy Revoked

Cliff Threshold Exceeded: Consuming 401 or more units revokes 100% of the Delhi Government subsidy. The consumer must pay the full unsubsidized bill from unit 1.

Subsidy Amount: ₹0.00 (Zero)

💡 Expert Tips to Save on Delhi Electricity Bills
1. Manage Consumption Near 200 & 400 Unit Cliffs: Using 201 units instead of 200 units converts a ₹0 Zero Bill into a ₹450+ bill. Using 401 units instead of 400 units loses up to ₹800 in subsidy instantly. Monitor your meter daily during high-usage months.
2. Optimum Inverter AC Temperature (25°C): Setting air conditioning at 25°C or 26°C reduces power consumption by 25–30% compared to 18°C–20°C, easily saving 100+ units every summer month.
3. Optimize Sanctioned Load: If your sanctioned load is 3 kW or 4 kW but your actual peak demand never exceeds 2 kW, applying for load reduction to 2 kW cuts your demand charge from ₹50/kW to ₹20/kW, reducing fixed costs by 60%.
4. PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Installing rooftop solar with net metering offsets your grid units, keeping your net grid consumption under the 200-unit threshold and guaranteeing a permanent ₹0 bill.
