How TGSPDCL (TSSPDCL) Electricity Bills Are Calculated in Telangana (2026)

Telangana operates one of the most distinctive electricity billing systems in India under the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC). Rather than using conventional telescopic slabs where every consumer enjoys the lowest tier rates regardless of usage, Telangana follows The 3-Tier Group Re-rating Architecture. Your total monthly consumption determines which group applies, and the entire bill re-rates starting from unit 1. Combined with the Telangana Government’s Gruha Jyothi 200 Units Free Power Scheme, understanding your consumption bracket is essential to managing electricity costs.

The 3-Tier Group Re-rating Architecture Explained

In most Indian states, if you consume 250 units, your first 100 units are always billed at the lowest lifeline rate. In Telangana, this is NOT the case. As soon as your total monthly consumption crosses 100 units or 200 units, your entire slab table is replaced from unit 1:

Group A [LT-I(A)] ≤ 100 Units

Subsidized Lifeline Tier

For modest electricity users consuming up to 100 units per month:

  • • 0 – 50 units: ₹1.95 / unit
  • • 51 – 100 units: ₹3.10 / unit
  • • Customer Charge: ₹40 to ₹70
Maximum energy charge for 100 units is ₹252.50.
Group B [LT-I(B)(i)] 101 – 200 Units

Moderate Consumption Tier

As soon as usage reaches 101 units, the ₹1.95 lifeline rate vanishes:

  • • 0 – 100 units: ₹3.40 / unit (Re-rated!)
  • • 101 – 200 units: ₹4.80 / unit
  • • Customer Charge: ₹90 / month
The first 100 units cost ₹340.00 instead of ₹252.50.
Group C [LT-I(B)(ii)] > 200 Units

High Consumption Tier

Crossing 200 units triggers a massive upward jump from unit 1:

  • • 0 – 200 units: ₹5.10 / unit (Re-rated!)
  • • 201 – 300 units: ₹7.70 / unit
  • • 301 – 400 units: ₹9.00 / unit
  • • 401 – 800 units: ₹9.50 / unit
  • • 801+ units: ₹10.00 / unit
The first 200 units cost ₹1,020.00 instead of ₹820.00.

Telangana Gruha Jyothi Scheme & The 201-Unit Cliff Trap

White Ration Card / Food Security Card Beneficiaries

The Telangana Government’s Gruha Jyothi Scheme provides 100% free electricity up to 200 units per month for domestic consumers holding a valid Food Security Card (White Ration Card).

When Consumption ≤ 200 Units (Zero Bill): The Telangana Government covers 100% of the Energy Charges, Fixed Demand Charges, Banded Customer Charges, and Electricity Duty. Net payable bill is ₹0.00.
When Consumption Reaches 201 Units (Cliff Trap!): If usage exceeds 200 units by even 1 single unit (201 units), the entire subsidy is completely withdrawn. Furthermore, the consumer is instantly re-rated under Group C rates from unit 1 (0–200 units @ ₹5.10 + 201st unit @ ₹7.70).
The Gruha Jyothi Financial Cliff: At 200 units, your electricity bill is ₹0.00. At 201 units, your bill surges immediately to ₹1,190.80. Consuming just one extra unit costs nearly ₹1,200!

Fixed Charges, Banded Customer Charges & Electricity Duty

A TGSPDCL power bill consists of three components in addition to slab energy charges:

Monthly Consumption Bracket Fixed Demand Charge Customer Charge (Domestic) Customer Charge (Commercial) Electricity Duty
0 – 50 Units ₹10.00 / kW ₹40.00 / mo ₹50.00 / mo ₹0.06 / unit
51 – 100 Units ₹10.00 / kW ₹70.00 / mo ₹90.00 / mo ₹0.06 / unit
101 – 200 Units ₹10.00 / kW ₹90.00 / mo ₹105.00 / mo ₹0.06 / unit
201 – 300 Units ₹10.00 / kW ₹100.00 / mo ₹105.00 / mo ₹0.06 / unit
301 – 400 Units ₹10.00 / kW ₹120.00 / mo ₹120.00 / mo ₹0.06 / unit
401 – 800 Units ₹10.00 / kW ₹140.00 / mo ₹160.00 / mo ₹0.06 / unit
Above 800 Units ₹50.00 / kW ₹160.00 / mo ₹160.00 / mo ₹0.06 / unit

💡 Practical Ways to Lower Your TGSPDCL / TGNPDCL Bill
1. Never Let Your Meter Cross 200 Units If on Gruha Jyothi: Because exceeding 200 units by just 1 unit adds almost ₹1,200 to your bill, check your digital meter reading on the 20th and 25th of every month. Keep heavy appliances off during the final days of your billing cycle.
2. Avoid the 100-Unit Boundary Jump for Regular Homes: At 100 units, you pay ₹252.50 in energy charges. At 105 units, because the entire bill re-rates to Group B starting from unit 1, your energy charges jump to ₹364.00 for just 5 extra units.
3. Check Your Sanctioned Load: Standard apartments and homes in Hyderabad frequently have 3 kW to 5 kW sanctioned loads. If your usage exceeds 800 units in summer, your fixed charges increase to ₹50/kW/month. Keeping your sanctioned load aligned with actual needs avoids unnecessary fixed charges.
4. Install Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar: Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, installing a 2–3 kW rooftop solar system generates 240–360 units monthly. This offsets high Group C rates (up to ₹10/unit) and lowers your net grid consumption to zero.
