Select Domestic Category (LT-IA)
Domestic connections receive 200 free units if usage ≤ 500 units, or 100 free units if > 500 units.
Enter Bi-Monthly Units (60 Days)
TNEB strictly follows a 60-day bi-monthly meter reading cycle.
Review Subsidy & Total Bill
The calculator deducts eligible free unit subsidies and computes energy charges across telescopic slabs.
Understanding TANGEDCO Electricity Bill Calculation Logic
Electricity billing in Tamil Nadu is governed by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) and implemented by TANGEDCO (formerly TNEB). Following the State Government's tariff freeze order, the revised rates effective from 1 July 2025 remain active for 2026.
1. The 60-Day Bi-Monthly Billing Cycle
Unlike most Indian states that bill monthly, TANGEDCO calculates power bills for residential and small low-tension connections once every two months (60 days). This means all official slab quotas (such as the 400-unit base slab and the 500-unit subsidy threshold) apply to two months of combined consumption, not a single month.
2. Domestic (LT-IA) Slab Rates & The Free Units Subsidy Rule
TNEB domestic billing uses a progressive telescopic structure with two separate subsidy categories based on total bi-monthly consumption:
If your bi-monthly usage is 500 units or less, the first 200 units are 100% free, sponsored by the Government of Tamil Nadu (saving you up to ₹990.00). Remaining units up to 400 are billed at ₹4.95/unit, and units 401–500 at ₹6.65/unit.
Once your bi-monthly usage crosses 500 units, your free quota is reduced to 100 free units (saving ₹495.00). Units above 400 are charged under higher progressive slabs up to ₹12.15/unit.
| Slab Range (Bi-Monthly) | Energy Rate (₹/unit) | Billing Logic & Applicability |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 400 units | ₹4.95 | Base slab. If ≤ 500u, first 200u are free (₹0). If > 500u, first 100u are free (₹0). |
| 401 – 500 units | ₹6.65 | Applicable to the next 100 units consumed above 400 units. |
| 501 – 600 units | ₹8.80 | Triggers when crossing 500 units; reduces free subsidy to 100 units. |
| 601 – 800 units | ₹9.95 | Next 200 units billed at ₹9.95 per unit. |
| 801 – 1,000 units | ₹11.05 | Next 200 units billed at ₹11.05 per unit. |
| 1,001 units & above | ₹12.15 | All remaining units above 1,000 billed at the maximum slab rate. |
3. Step-by-Step Worked Calculation Examples
Here is the exact arithmetic used by TANGEDCO for two common consumption scenarios:
Example A: 250 Units (Usage ≤ 500u)
Net: ₹247.50- Gross Units in Slab [0 – 400]: 250u × ₹4.95 ₹1,237.50
- Less: 200 Free Units Subsidy (200u × ₹4.95) −₹990.00
- Fixed Demand Charges (Waived by Govt) ₹0.00
- Electricity Duty (Exempt on Domestic LT-IA) ₹0.00
- Final Payable Amount ₹247.50
Example B: 550 Units (Usage > 500u)
Net: ₹2,590.00- Slab 1 [0 – 400]: 400 units × ₹4.95 ₹1,980.00
- Slab 2 [401 – 500]: 100 units × ₹6.65 ₹665.00
- Slab 3 [501 – 550]: 50 units × ₹8.80 ₹440.00
- Gross Energy Charge (400u + 100u + 50u) ₹3,085.00
- Less: 100 Free Units Subsidy (100u × ₹4.95) −₹495.00
- Final Payable Amount ₹2,590.00
At 500 units, your bill is ₹1,485.00 (after ₹990 subsidy). At 550 units, your bill jumps to ₹2,590.00 — an increase of ₹1,105.00 for just 50 extra units. This happens because crossing 500 units cuts your government subsidy in half (losing ₹495.00) while simultaneously charging higher rates (₹6.65 and ₹8.80) on your upper units.
4. Commercial (LT-V) & Apartment Common Facilities (LT-ID) Rules
LT-V Commercial (Shops & Offices)
Commercial connections follow a flat-rate system (non-telescopic):
- Usage ≤ 100 units: All units at ₹6.65/unit.
- Usage > 100 units: All units charged at ₹10.45 flat.
- Fixed Demand Charge: ₹110/kW/month (₹220/kW per bi-monthly bill).
- Electricity Duty: 5% on total energy charges.
LT-ID Common Facilities (Apartments)
For residential apartment common lighting, lifts, water pump motors, and security gates:
- Energy Charge: Flat rate of ₹8.55 per unit for all consumption.
- Fixed Demand Charge: ₹55/kW/month (₹110/kW per bi-monthly bill).
- Electricity Duty: 5% on total energy charges.
- Note: Individual flats remain under Domestic LT-IA.
